Ma’am Flora Mahmood was a force of nature in my teen years, shaping my personal and academic journey ever since she first called me to her office. As a counselor, she was meticulous and drove me to work harder than I ever had before, and always had the strength to tell me exactly what I needed to hear, even if it wasn’t necessarily what I wanted or liked to hear at the time.
She helped me realize my own potential, and then taught me how to tell my story to the world the way it needed to be told. Her grasp of the college application process is thorough and pragmatic, and she was always highly professional even when the stress of the application cycle was at its peak. I would not have applied to half the schools I got into had she not badgered me to a point where even I had no choice but to believe in myself completely.
On a more personal note, Ma’am Flora was – and remains – my friend and confidante. She helped me navigate high school when things were unbearably dark, and helped me celebrate the days when the light would shine a little brighter. She is deeply empathetic and kind – two traits that make her an exceptional person for young people to be around and learn from. I owe her so much, both major and trivial, and I know that she will change lives for the better for many years to come.
Thank you, Ma’am Flo for so much more than the acceptance envelopes in my mailbox.
