“I remember my high school orientation where Flora Mahmood addressed a bunch of tittering, distracted teenagers and told them with the conviction of stating fact that she will make something out of them. I remember the quiet respect settle over us all; hope bloomed, ambition sparked.
I often spent breaks and free classes in her office, tagging along with more accomplished friends working with her on college applications. I would just sit and joke with her and eat the goodies she kept on her desk. And never once did she discourage me from stepping foot in that room, even on the busiest days. That’s what I learned generosity, patience and acceptance feel like.
When I told her I got accepted into LUMS and NUST, relieved, she told me I could do better. That’s what I realized ambition and validation of my potential sounds like.
Gentle but firm, practical but kind, she takes genuine interest in the lives of whoever she touches, invests her whole self in your whole self and still has so much more to give. When you go to her for guidance, she doesn’t see the you in front of her, she envisions the you that you can be at your best. And she will do whatever it takes to drag that part out of you, kick and scream as it may.
Now, even as a NUST graduate in Economics, I’m still a lost lamb, afraid of the life ahead. I turned to the one person I trust with my future and Ma’am Flora asked no questions; just gave me the answers I desperately needed.
Not just your college application but also your entire future is in the best hands with Ma’am Flora; she is excellent at whatever she does and whatever she does is excellent. Let her take care of it.
Meanwhile, here’s what you should do:
Borrow confidence from her. Borrow her discipline and drive and utter refusal to settle for second place. Borrow her will to fight, fall and stand back up. Borrow her compassion, patience and humility.
Learn from every part of her she gives you, be greedy for it, and make it your own. Do that sincerely, and you’ll become someone you’re proud of being and sharing with others.”
