To understand Ma’am Flora you have to understand that the louder she is, the more she cares about you and the more she yells at you, the more she loves you. She’s going to write you an email three am in the morning caps-locking her hate for your half-assed attempt at an essay but she’s also going to write you an email three am in the morning after heavily editing your essay, making sure its perfect.
My time with her may have been short, but her impact on my life has been anything but. During one of the most traumatic slumps in my life, she really came through. She guided me, pushed me to be a better person, and helped me regain my balance in life. Whenever I was shutting myself out or felt like I was failing, she was there for me, going above and beyond, reassuring me and opening me up to a side of my creativity that I didn’t even know I had. She believed in me. She was a guidance counsellor in more than just one aspect of my life and most of the time I don’t think she even realized it.
When I think of strong, independent women who have achieved, and will achieve, greatness in their life, I think of Ma’am Flora. She has shown the utmost resilience and grace throughout the years that I have known her. Her ability to silence a hundred screaming children with one syllable is oddly inspiring but what I find more inspiring is that whenever she speaks, she speaks the truth and whenever she talks, she holds the attention of every single person in the room.
When you ‘work’ with her you kinda just know that you’re going to get into a great college but you don’t really expect to create this weird, awkwardly comfortable bond that will probably last a lifetime because she cares way too much and you never want to let go of someone as loving and wonderfully intimidating as she is.
